Four WHS Winter Teams Battling For Post Season

WATERFORD CA - Waterford High School is showing growth in the Southern Athletic League by having four teams in position to capture a post season berth. Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball all are in the hunt looking to get into the dance that is the Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. Southern League gets three automatic bids for each sport.

The top-three teams for each sport of play will advance into the playoffs. For Boys and Girls Basketball, a team can be given a Wild Card berth if they finish in the Top 8 for the Section Division 5 Rankings. Three of the four Waterford teams are sitting in 4th place and a game out of the post-season. Those teams are: Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Girls Basketball. One team, Boys Basketball, sits tied in 3rd place. However, despite being in 4th place Waterford Girls Basketball is currently ranked 8th for SJS Division V. Waterford’s Boys are ranked 9th.

We are going to take a look below at each team and make a prediction on how they will end up. Do you agree? Will we be right? Who knows? Here we go!

Boys Soccer:

Waterford Boys Soccer FC is currently sitting in 4th place a game behind Delhi. There is no Wild Card spot in Soccer, so the Wildcats must finish in the top five to advance to the Playoffs. Waterford Boys Soccer have competed well this season in the Southern League, sitting at 5-3 but having a +4 goal advantaged combined against all league opponents. The Boys FC have the talent and the fire power to get it done. If there is a weakness, it’s that the Wildcats give up too many goals in the stretch.

Waterford and Delhi are going to be in a dog fight to the finish for a playoff berth. With similar schedules, it seems likely that the fight could end up being decided when Waterford travels to Delhi on February 14th.

Bottom Line Prediction:

Delhi is through the toughest stretch of their schedule, they coast to a 1 game advantage over the Wildcats and keep them out of the postseason. But this one could come down to a flip of a coin, literally.

Girls Soccer:

The Lady Cats FC had a rough start to the season, but they have since turned it around in the league season. The Lady Cats are sitting at 3-3-2 behind Mariposa who are sitting at 4-2-2. Mariposa owns a 1-0-1 advantage over the season series.

Much like their brother FC, the Lady Cats have the fire power on offense to get the job done. It’s the defense that has struggled in the stretch. The Lady Cats have given up a league 2nd highest 27 combined goals. That being said, the Lady Cats also have a league 2nd highest 27 goals scored in their favor. It highlights the up-and-down roller coaster of a season they have had.

Bottom Line Prediction:

The Lady Cats have the favorable schedule down the stretch, but the Mariposa win against the Lady Cats this season will come into play. The Lady Cats FC misses the post season by just half-a-game.

Boys Basketball:

The Boys team at Waterford are in the thick of the battle for a playoff berth. Like their sister team, they are looking for the final of three Southern League spots. Currently they are tied with Gustine for the spot. Waterford and Gustine have split the season series.

Waterford has the fire power to earn the spot and they have a favorable schedule to get it done. Waterford must go up against Undefeated Orestimba again, but they finish with the bottom half of the league with Delhi, Le Grand and Denair who have a combined 4 league wins this season. Gustine still has to go through Orestimba and Mariposa, two likely losses for the Reds.

Bottom Line Prediction:

Waterford Boys have the schedule and the fire power they get into the dance at third place and one game ahead of Gustine.

Girls Basketball:

The Lady Cats were once a dark horse candidate for a League Title this season, but that was not to be the case. Mariposa and Orestimba still reign in the Southern League. But the biggest surprise of the season has been the rise of Le Grand. Le Grand has become the Waterford of last season, the come out of nowhere dominate team who seems to have enough to knock someone out of the Top 3. Waterford has already lost to Le Grand earlier this season, and will finish the year in a probable win-and-in game into the SJS Playoffs.

Waterford currently sits outside of the Playoff picture in 4th place and one game behind 3rd place Le Grand. The Lady Cats are going to have to have as strong home stretch to have any hope of going to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

Bottom Line Prediction:

Lady Cats miss the playoffs by the thinnest margins. They finish 9th in the section and one spot out of a Wild Card Berth. They finish two games behind the Lady Bull Dogs from Le Grand. However, it’s quite possible a flip of the coin could determine who gets to go and who stays home.
